PROCTER
& GAMBLE DREAMBUILDER CELEBRATION AWARDS
WINNING PLAYWRIGHTS
August 1, 2002: We are pleased to announce
the winner and runners up of our annual
Procter & Gamble Dreambuilder Celebration
Scribe competition. Craig J. Harris' script,
"Skin Complex" was selected by
a panel of 11 judges from more than 150
entries submitted as this year's Scribe
Award winner. Dayton resident Alan Bomar
Jones' "The Other American Family"
and Milwaukee writer Lora Hyler's "Stomping
Embers" were awarded runner-up honors.
Judges
praised Hyler's work, noting her "great
feel for the characters and details"
and noting the script's "important
theme for the generations." and Jones'
work, "an absolute pleasure to read
with excellent theme, plot and character
development" and "An original
spin on a common issue within the community."
Jones and Hyler are no strangers to the
Dreambuilders. Jones won an Emmy nomination
for his role as the Reverend Brockton in
last year's Dreambuilder movie, "The
Movement." Hyler assisted in the filming
of "In the Net".
Harris,
an actor and voiceover artist, started writing
with the hope of bringing more diverse roles
to television and the theatre. "Skin
Complex" will be his first produced
script. When introduced to the creator of
the Dreambuilder Celebration, Craig remarked,
"You're the reason I wrote this script.
I sent you an email in May asking how I
could get a role in the next Dreambuilder
movie. You told me to write the winning
script, and write in a role for myself.
I guess I did!"
Judges
praised Harris' work, calling it "a
unique concept with an original way of dealing
with perceptions", "a fascinating
premise", "an interesting look
at racism through the twilight zone"
and "entertaining with a twist of comedy".
Harris
will receive a cash award of $2,500.00,
the Dreambuilder Celebration trophy and
will see his script produced as a made-for-television
movie to be aired on WDTN early in 2003.
The
writing competition is the first stage of
the year-long Dreambuilder Celebration.
Auditions for actors and crew for Skin Complex
will be announced in the next few weeks.
The
Dreambuilder Celebration was created in
1997 to encourage inclusion and understanding
of cultural diversity by sharing history,
ideas and entertainment. By providing opportunities
in the fields of broadcasting, journalism
and the arts, the Dreambuilder Celebration
honors the community and supports broadcast
hopefuls from all ethnic backgrounds in
pursuing their dreams. "Skin Complex"
will be the eighth movie produced in the
Celebration's six year history.
